Did your scanner go missing on Photoshop CS4′s Import menu?

Did you get Adobe’s latest Photoshop CS4 and then try import an image from your scanner? If you are on Mac OS X you might notice that your printer no longer shows up on the Import menu. The reason: you need to install the now-optional plugin. (Optional? Really?)

Quoting from Adobe’s web site:

The TWAIN plug-in is optional only for Mac OS (and available for download here). On 32-bit versions of Windows, Photoshop installs the TWAIN plug-in automatically. 64-bit versions of Windows do not support the TWAIN plug-in.

In fact, CS4 now makes several other plugins optional too:

  • Bigger Tiles
  • Picture Package (ContactSheetII)
  • ExtractPlus
  • PatternMaker
  • PhotomergeUI
  • TWAIN
  • Web Photo Gallery (WebContactSheetII) plus presets
  • Textures for Texturizer
  • script for Layer Comps to Web Photo Gallery

Install the Mac plugin and you’ll get your scanner back:
